Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Will Headline Marvel's Wonder Man Disney+ Series

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II attends a screening of Ambulance on March 24, 2022 in Madrid, Spain. Photo: Pablo Cuadra/Getty Images for Universal Pictures (Getty Images) Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a multitalented performer—earning accolades for his work on the big and small screens, as well as the Broadway stage. But it sure seems like he has a soft spot for genre fare, and the star of Candyman , Aquaman , Watchmen , and The Matrix Resurrections (but not, alas, Furiosa ) is adding another big role to his resume: the title character in Marvel’s Disney+ series Wonder Man . Deadline  broke the news that the Emmy-winning actor is coming aboard the in-the-works project from Dustin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) , who will direct and executive produce, and Andrew Guest (Hawkeye) , who will be the show’s head writer. We also already knew that Ben Kingsley will be reprising his role as Trevor Slattery—aka “the Mandarin”—as seen in Shang-Chi and Iron Man 3 . As the

A Friday the 13th Prequel Series Is Coming to Peacock

Crystal Lake , a Friday the 13th prequel, is coming to Peacock. Image: Paramount It’s a Halloween miracle: Friday the 13th is coming back. Sort of. Peacock just announced a straight-to-series order for a new show called Crystal Lake , which is described as a “ Friday the 13th expanded prequel series.” Bryan Fuller , best known for his work on Hannibal , will be running the show for A24 and the streamer. “I discovered Friday the 13th in the pages of Famous Monsters magazine when I was 10 years old and I have been thinking about this story ever since,” Fuller said in a press release. “When it comes to horror, A24 raises the bar and pushes the envelope and I’m thrilled to be exploring the campgrounds of Crystal Lake under their banner.” “Friday the 13th is one of the most iconic horror franchises in movie history and we were dying to revisit this story with our upcoming drama series Crystal Lake ,” added Universal executive Susan Rovner. “We can’t wait to get to work with Bry

I'm Totally Fine Is a Weird, Sweet Sci-Fi Tale About Letting Go

Vanessa (Jillian Bell) and Jennifer (Natalie Morales), except it’s not really Jennifer, in I’m Totally Fine. Image: Courtesy of Decal No two people handle grief the same way, and no two situations involving dealing with a terrible loss are ever identical. But Vanessa ( Jillian Bell ) may have the most unique grief experience ever when she meets an alien (Natalie Morales) who looks exactly like Jennifer, her recently deceased and very dearly missed lifelong best friend. This bizarre, heartbreaking, but ultimately cathartic encounter plays out across I’m Totally Fine , a melancholy new comedy from director Brandon Dermer and writer Alisha Ketry. Along with Bell and Morales, the cast also features a small but fun turn by What We Do in the Shadows ’ Harvey GuillĂ©n—so if you ever wanted to see Guillermo play a chipper DJ who keeps party drugs in his record bag, you have a reason to watch I’m Totally Fine . But while GuillĂ©n is delightful, the movie belongs to Bell. When we first m

One Piece Film: Red Takes the Pirate Franchise to New Musical Heights

Image: Toei Animation Eiichiro Oda’s pirate manga One Piece has been around for a long time—longer than a good amount of its fanbase has been alive, even—but it feels like it’s only recently become a mainstream anime juggernaut. It has broken the Guinness world record for being the best-selling manga of all time, and its anime adaptation saw the release of its 1000th episode back in 2021, as well as the cast reveal for an upcoming live action series . Suffice to say, One Piece is on a high right now, and that’ll continue for a good while following the release of its newest theatrical movie, One Piece Film: Red . Announced back in 2021 during a celebration of Episode 1000, the film was a part of the franchise’s overall 25th anniversary celebration earlier this year, and currently stands as both Japan’s highest-grossing film of the year, along with the highest-grossing One Piece movie in general. Perhaps as a result of that, it’s supposedly the first film in the franchise to have

The Walking Dead Trains Its Sight on the End

Photo: Jace Downs/AMC Well, it’s taken a while, but The Walking Dead seems to be getting on track. In tonight’s episode, it choo-choo-chooses to gather its characters (well, most of them) for a single, coherent plotline that will lead directly to the final conflict with the Commonwealth. One could even say the show is running at full steam toward the end. Did I mention a train was in this episode? All that positivity aside, if you look at the individual scenes of “Outpost 22,” it’s kind of a mess. There’s a lot of dead weight (not a zombie pun, believe it or not), and very little of the episode has those aforementioned stakes during its runtime. After everyone was captured and shipped out of the Commonwealth last week, Maggie, Rosita, and Gabriel—who are helpfully separated from everyone on the bus and guarded solely by a sleeping Commontrooper—easily manage to escape. They get separated, but that’s fine, because they quickly run back into each other without any meaningful inci

Drew Barrymore Truly Believed E.T. Was Real

Screenshot: Universal Pictures/Amblin In an upcoming special on The Drew Barrymore Show , the original cast of E.T. reunites to reminisce about the making of the Amblin classic film from director Stephen Spielberg. This year the film celebrates 40 years and has had a special IMAX theatrical run in addition to a new home release to commemorate the milestone. Barrymore’s daytime talk show has played host to some incredible interviews and reunions (like for Scream ) with her former cast-mates but it’s this one we’ve been waiting for. In the preview clip released on Twitter for the reunion slated to air Halloween Monday, we get an incredible nugget about Barrymore’s behavior on set around the beloved alien. “Now, I believed E.T. was real!” she told Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas and Robert McNaughton, who respectively played her mother Mary and brothers Eliott and Michael. Thomas confirmed this, “The first thing I remember is that we were on stage, and it was quite cold on the stage,

Cameron Crowe Considers Joining MCU With a Dazzler Movie

Screenshot: Marvel Here’s an acclaimed director who doesn’t shun the Marvel Cinematic Universe . During an interview with Rolling Stone while being profiled for the opening of his Almost Famous musical, filmmaker Cameron Crowe talked about his interest in taking on an MCU film, if there was a right fit for him.Thankfully, he was suggested to look up one X-Men in particular. “Throw me a Dazzler movie! Let’s do it.” he responded to the idea of his taking on the musical influenced Marvel pop star, they just need to get acquainted first. The character has had a long history of almost making it to the big screen , so this would be a perfect fit. He clarified that he’ll be looking to getting familiar with them, asking, “Who should play Dazzler?” Fan casts have long considered artists like Rihanna ( who just did a song for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ), Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift , or BeyoncĂ© take on the role of the the super sonic heroine who can take sound vibrations and weaponize them

Liam Hemsworth Will Replace Henry Cavill on The Witcher

Photo: ANGELA WEISS (Getty Images) This was definitely not on our pop culture Bingo card. Netflix has announced the recasting of Geralt of Rivia on their hit series The Witcher . Henry Cavill will be leaving the role and Liam Hemsworth ( The Hunger Games ) will be stepping in for season 4 of the show. Guess, we have Superman to thank for this (Geralt grunt). Truly, wish Cavill could just stay on both but who knows what his new commitment will be to the Man of Steel over at DC Studios . Hopefully, we’ll find out soon as season 3, his final as Geralt, has wrapped. On social media he shared his statement : “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill said. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and
