9 Great Sci-Fi Crews That Inspired My Interstellar Graphic Novel

The Hard Switch Image: Avery Hill Publishing My latest book, The Hard Switch, is about the crew of a small cargo ship , comprising Ada, Haika, and Mallic (an extractor, pilot, and engineer, respectively), and as I was thinking about this central trio, I started musing on “crews” in general. What makes a great crew ? Which crew would I most happily join (impending disasters aside)? So, here are nine great sci-fi crews. My only rule is they have to be in charge of some kind of ship, otherwise it’s a “team,” which is a different proposition entirely. Anyway, you’ll get the hang of it, let’s go! Alien Alien Trailer HD (Original 1979 Ridley Scott Film) Sigourney Weaver It’s important to start big, and it’s hard to think of any sci-fi that’s not been influenced by Alien since its release in 1979. The crew of the Nostromo are almost the definition of a perfect crew. It’s a proper working ship, and everyone onboard is there because of the job they do. They have to work together and ...

Aquaman's James Wan Says More Topo Is on the Menu

Image: Warner Bros. Sure, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been delayed multiple times, but that just means the DC Movie Machine has had more time to prime the media on what to expect from the second installment in the Jason Momoa -led franchise. Today’s fanservice character of the day is “Topo.” Topo, for those who don’t know, is an octopus; in the comics, he’s a sort of sidekick. He’s the Flounder to Aquaman’s Ariel. And today, Empire released a preview of its interview with director James Wan , in which he talks all about this little invertebrate, generously called a “fan favorite” in the article. “Topo is a real character in this one! In the comic, he’s a big part of Arthur’s life—a sidekick, pet, friend. So, we’re leaning into that,” Wan explained. Topo, who can be seen for maybe five seconds in the first film, playing bongos, will be entirely computer generated. But, according to Empire, in his “creation, efforts were made to create real chemistry between the titular hero ...

Doctor Who Wants to Keep Animating Its Missing History

Screenshot: BBC As Doctor Who nears another milestone anniversary , the long shadow of the BBC’s loss of almost a hundred stories from the earliest eras of the show —destroyed in the process of archival junking in TV’s nascent age—still lingers. But the corporation is still clinging to one lifeline that could still let fans experience this missing history. Although several episodes have been recovered in fits and starts in the years since the BBC concluded its policy of junking archival programming in the mid 1970s, of the 253 individual episodes of Doctor Who broadcast in the ‘60s across the tenures of William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton ’s Doctors, 97 episodes are still lost. And while there’s still very small chances some of those stories could be recovered, the further time marches on, the less likely copies of those missing tales will ever see the light of day—whether they exist at all or are kept from public access in private collections. But that doesn’t mean these sto...

James Bond's Producers Are Still Figuring Out His Future

Image: Eon Productions Daniel Craig didn’t have the longest run of James Bond movies, but he did have one of the most eventful. 2007's Casino Royale gave the series a shot in the arm that both made it matter more in the eye of the mainstream public, and greatly boosted his profile. As much as people have spent the years since 2021's No Time to Die trying to figure out who could (or should) be the next 007 agent , the series producers are still just trying to figure out what the next James Bond even is. Talking to The Guardian , producer Barbara Broccoli explained the franchise’s executives are still trying to nail down what to do with him for the next set of movies. Part of the issue is trying to have Bond reflect how the world has changed in the near 20 years since Craig first took the role. His Bond focused on “what a 21st-century hero would look like,” something she felt the world was ready for at the time. The aim for the new iteration is to follow suit, but it isn’t...

Stephen King's The Stand Lives Again with New Anthology Book

To this day, it remains an acclaimed book and is highly regarded as one of his best novels period.
