Lucy Lawless Was in Star Wars Talks Before Gina Carano's Mandalorian Exit

Lucy Lawless at Australian LGBTI Awards in 2017. Photo: Mark Metcalfe/Getty (Getty Images) In the wake of The Mandalordian ’s Gina Carano being dismissed from the show after posting anti-Semitic memes , spreading election conspiracy theories, and mocking the usage of pronouns, Star Wars fans wasted no time speculating who might replace the actress if her character, Cara Dune , was going to return to the series in the future. Though Disney hasn’t suggested either way what the future holds for Cara Dune, Lucy Lawless’ name has been floated in more than a few fan spaces for reasons that should be obvious. Characters like Cara Dune owe a lot to Lawless’ run as the star of Xena: Warrior Princess , and the idea of Lawless lending her talents to the Star Wars franchise is something that, on paper, makes perfect sense. Word of people being interested in Lawless joining Star Wars apparently made its way to the actress herself, who recently opened up to Metro.co.uk   about how she w...

10 of The Simpsons' Best Treehouse of Horror Skits

These are the spooky skits we’d trade our soul for, delicious donuts be damned. Screenshot: Disney Spooky season is upon us! For some that might mean a lot of stressful scares and gory horror , but for those among us who are a little more cowardly when it comes to getting in the seasonal spirit, alternate means are required. Thankfully, The Simpsons has been filling my Halloween need for the best part of three decades now . Here are some choice selections for your Treehouse of Horror watch list. Time and Punishment ( Treehouse of Horror V , 1994) Screenshot: Disney Any Treehouse skit that is just Homer constantly trying to undo his own goofs, but freed from the typical constraints of him doing that on almost any other episode of The Simpsons , is always going to be good. But the future where Ned Flanders is world leader and lobotomizes everyone for re-Neducation? Classic gag. From left to right: Chimi the Skull Warrior, Picchu the Puma Barbarian, and Rico the Rooster Wizard. But if she’s going to escape her fate, as well as fight what appears to be a variety of other gods, she’s going to need some help. Enter: the Three. Chimi the Skull Warrior ( Brooklyn 99 's Stephanie Beatriz, who is also voicing a character in Disney’s Encanto ), Rico the Rooster Wizard ( The Last O.G .’s Allen Maldonado), and Picchu the Puma Barbarian (comedian Gabriel Iglesias) are all outcasts from faraway lands who are destined to help Maya on her journey. Here’s the new trailer: Although the trailer isn’t bad, per se, it feels a lot like a video game trailer: constant action shots, constant ...

In Shin Kamen Rider's First Trailer, Hideaki Anno Is Just Living His Best Life

Rider jump! Rider Kick! Kamen Rider, Kamen Rider, Rider, Rider! Gif: Toei Congratulations to Shin Kamen Rider for having the best costume in a superhero movie, but then again, that’s mostly because it’s just the original Kamen Rider suit. At a press conference in Japan today, Shin Kamen Rider director and writer Hideaki Anno—who, outside of his association with Neon Genesis Evangelion , previously took on tokusatsu icons Godzilla and Ultraman for their own “Shin” movies alongside collaborator Shinji Higuchi—revealed the main stars of the film, alongside trailers. The Last Samurai ’s Sosuke Ikematsu will play Takeshi Hongo, the young man kidnapped by the villainous Shocker organization and transformed into a superpowered cyborg—only to turn against them and fight back their evil as the very first Kamen Rider. Ace Attorney ’s Minami Hamabe will play one of Hongo’s closest allies from the original show, Ruriko Midorikawa, the daughter of a professor killed by Kamen Rider ’s very...

Star Trek: Lower Decks Showed Everyone How the Other Half Lives

It’s all fun and spacewalks until your ship warps off without you. Image: Paramount+ Paramount+’s animated Star Trek: Lower Decks has already done a fantastic job of really diving into the internal conflict and privileges of the typical Starfleet bridge crew and the tough lives our lower deckers live. But just as much of this season has been about building on the bonds between our four heroes , this week the show dipped into a Smörgåsbord of Trek gags to strengthen the bond between the whole crew. The initial set up for “I, Excretus” leads you down the line of expecting Lower Decks to re-litigate the same kind of dramas it covered in its first season—a splash of “Moist Vessel ” and its examination of the Mariner/Captain Freeman relationship here, a splash of “Crisis Point” and its holoprogram riff on classic Trek movie scenarios there. A Federation drill officer comes aboard the Cerritos to test the readiness skills of the crew and things are quickly thrown into chaos whe...

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Is Frivolous, Forgettable Fun

The poster for Venom: Let There Be Carnage . Image: Sony Pictures It’s really simple. If you were a fan of the original Venom , you are probably going to enjoy Venom: Let There Be Carnage . Everything that worked about the first Sony/Marvel movie—the offbeat humor, the sultry special effects, the intense characters—is all back in full force in the sequel. However, for the most part, everything that didn’t work is also back, so your personal feelings on the original are a very good indicator of how you’ll feel about this one. I say this from experience. When I watched the first Venom in 2018, it was an incredibly fun time. I was in awe at the absurdity of what I was seeing, the unique way star Tom Hardy played this man who had been chosen as a host for an alien symbiote—it was so weird, more than a little wacky, and ultimately enjoyable. And even though I’d been waiting to see the character get his own story for years, 30 seconds after I left the theater I basically forgot ever...
