Eventual Exabyte DNA Storage on Roswell Molecular Electronic Chips

James Tour says that Roswell is bringing to world the $100 genome that can scale rapidly and also deliver Exabyte data storage. Paul Mola is the Founder, and CEO of Roswell Biotechnologies. Roswell could enable DNA storage technology. This would have exabyte capabilties. They have millions to billions of DNA readers on CMOS ships. They can read DNA, proteins, and other biomolecules with the speed and economics required for a complete and useful data storage and retrieval system. DNA can hold ten terabytes of data and can perform trillions of parallel calculations. Roswell is creating molecular electronic sensors on CMOS

Reading and Writing Genomes

Reading and Writing DNA has improved 2 to 10 times faster than Moore’s Law over the last 35 years. There has been over 10 million times improvement. Molecular and cell multiplexing enable atomically precise reactions at 1 trillion reactions per droplet. George Church gave a talk about reading and writing whole genomes. George Church giving a similar talk with overlap in the slides. Germline vs Somatic Gene Therapy 1. Billion-fold lower off-target (due to cell #) 2. Clonality allows checking (additional million-fold) 3. Immune Tolerance 4. 100% Delivery to every cell 5. $0 to subsequent generations Disadvantages: 1. Very long

A Cartoon Bunny Contemplates the Abyss in Animated Short Afterwork

By day, he’s a Looney Tunes-style rabbit whose bustling career is built around constantly getting bested by his nemesis, a cheeky carrot. By night, he wallows in depression brought on by the dark monotony of his constant defeats—until a strangely familiar vegetable pops up to taunt him in real life, too. Read more...

Our Top Posts of the Decade: A Dubious List for a Meaningless Timeline

As far as we can tell, the 2010s were nothing close to what most of us expected. Instead of flying cars , we got half-baked semi-autonomous vehicles . Instead of social media birthing kumbaya, it fueled genocide and helped erode the foundations of democracy and reality itself . Rather than tackle the impending doom of… Read more...

Awesome Mashup Celebrates a Decade of Movie Trailers

Movie trailers aren’t just an advertisement, they’re an artform in and of themselves—condensing a movie down into its finest moments . Sometimes, as we saw with films like Suicide Squad and  Hellboy , a trailer can even outshine the movie it’s promoting. Now, a new video montage is celebrating this decade’s best movie… Read more...

Pink Diamond Was the Villain of the Decade

For multiple seasons, Steven Universe hid the darkest and most devastating of its truths in plain sight. Save for Pearl , none of the Crystal Gems knew the reality of who Pink Diamond was as a person and just how profoundly her actions would hurt them all. Even now that everything’s been brought to light, Pink is still… Read more...

The Absolute Worst Tech of 2019

Gadgets have to work a lot harder to suck in 2019 than they have in years past. They have to bankrupt companies, reveal our data, or be so overpriced they even make Apple look cheap. The gadgets below did all that, but some went even further. Some were pointless Skymall dreck, and some nearly ruined much nicer and… Read more...

The Rise of Skywalker Writer Says Rey Reveal 'Doesn't Negate' The Last Jedi's Message

“Let the past die, kill it if you have to.” That was the takeaway from The Last Jedi , and a message that was largely lost in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , which felt preoccupied with its own legacy. This was perhaps most notable in the reveal about Rey , one that seemed to conflict with director Rian Johnson’s… Read more...

Combination Gene Therapy Progressing Against Aging

George Church indicates Rejuvenate Bio is working toward combination gene therapy against 300+ human genes that effect aging. There is also progress in super-resolution imaging of chromosomes and hyper-detailed tissue analysis. They will be able to analyze the DNA in the chromosome without breaking it up and knowing the exact position of the DNA. Microscopic imaging beyond the diffraction limit to 12 nanometers. The exponential biotechnology is scaling to the tissue and organ scale. It will then reach the full organism level.

What The Witcher Gets Wrong (and Right) About Disability Narratives

The world of fantasy has been one of the few genres to regularly include disabled characters, though this inclusion has always come with the concept of disfigurement and grotesquerie. One of the most famous disabled fantasy characters, George R.R. Martin’s Tyrion Lannister, is described in the first volume of the A … Read more...

Finding Over 100 Million Exoplanets By 2050

The cumulative number of exoplanets that have been discovered has been following power law scaling for the past 25 years and if this continued to 2050 then we would find about 100 million exoplanets. 20,000 exoplanets should be found from the past primary Kepler mission and the completed K2 mission and from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and from the planned 2026 PLATO mission. The Gaia mission should find between 15,000 and 90,000 depending on the final mission duration and the actual occurrence rates of massive planets in wide orbits. The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope is expected launch in 2025

Chip-to-chip Quantum Teleportation and Multi-photon Entanglement in silicon

Silicon is a compelling platform for classical optical telecommunications as well as quantum communications, both through optical fibers. In general, the silicon-based integrated quantum transceivers could provide possible low-cost and high-performance secure communication networks. A reliable transfer of single photon qubits from one silicon device to another has already been shown, and the distribution of entangled states has been verified through the violation of Bell inequalities. Here, researchers first distribute the full set of entangled Bell states between two devices, and then demonstrate key missing capabilities so far, i.e., the chip-to-chip teleportation. Schematic of the chip-to-chip entanglement distribution and teleportation

Speed of Sound Vortex Would Boost Engine Efficiency by 5-10%

Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) have patented a novel design for rapidly spinning the gas in combustion engines to boost efficiency by 5-10%. The ability to absorb energy while being heated of an ideal spinning gas is greater than that of a stationary one. A gas rotating at roughly the speed of sound, when used in a thermodynamic cycle, could allow engines to operate at lower temperature more efficiently than conventional internal combustion engines. The invention uses an eight-cycle engine, rather than a four-cycle engine, in order to spin the gas at the right points in the cycle
